Grey roof on large home - Protecting Your Roof Before and After a Storm

Protecting Your Roof Before and After a Storm

Protecting your roof before a storm hits can prevent damage, and as we all know, this is far more impactful than any future fix. That said, you also need to know how to protect your roof after a storm strikes because, no matter how much we prepare, a bad one will do damage.

Follow our tips below to save yourself the hassle of an expensive roof repair.

1. Trim Away Trees

A common problem during major weather events is falling debris from nearby objects, particularly trees. A small branch or twig may not present a problem, but larger limbs can cause serious damage.
As part of your regular maintenance routine, keep tree limbs cut back at least six feet from your roof and home.

2. Look for Leaks

Storms are really good at turning little leaks into big ones.
To find out if you have a potential problem on your hands, go up to your attic and be on the lookout for signs like stains or water spots. If nothing jumps out at you, but you think there may still be an issue, ask a friend of family member to head outside and use a garden hose to mimic rain.

3. Check on the Health of Your Roof

In addition to existing leaks, severe storms can also cause further damage to shingles or waterproofing that are already compromised.
During an outside inspection, look for:

  • Shingles that are missing or evidently damaged.
  • Faulty sealant or underlayment.
  • Loose or lost nails.
  • Obvious rust on flashings and other components.
  • Boots around pipes and vents that have worn or cracked.

Always keep safety top of mind when it comes to roof inspections. Never conduct them during harsh weather, and, if you need to go on your roof for any reason, always exercise extreme caution doing so. Roofs can be dangerous places to be without the proper training and safety precautions, and fresh rain or wet leaves can make them especially slippery.

The Right Installation Makes a Difference

It’s no doubt important to maintain and inspect your roof regularly, but ultimately a storm-proof roof comes down to quality installation from the start.
When choosing a roofer, consider:

  • Durable Materials: How long can you expect them to last? What wind speeds are they rated for?
  • Quality Workmanship: How many nails per shingle will they use? Will they be driven correctly? Will they install new flashings or reuse old ones? Do they use steel in valleys? Have you discussed attic insulation?
  • Company Legacy: How long has the roofer been in business? Do they maintain a physical address? What reviews have previous customers left about their work?
