Styles of Windows: Which Design is Right for Your Needs?

At Brock Doors and Windows, we offer a wide variety of windows to meet your needs. Here are some common varieties and what their names mean:
  • Single HungThe top sash of the window stays in place. There is no movement in this section of the window, so you can’t open that area or tilt it into the home. The bottom window is operable.
  • Double Hung: Both the bottom and top portions of the windows can move up and down. They usually offer a tilting action to make it easy to clean the windows from inside.
  • SliderWindows that move side to side on a track are known as “sliders.” This style is preferred when you need a wide window. You can choose a single slider or multiple sliders on the window.
  • Casement: When a crank handle is used to open the window, it is known as a “casement.” As the handle is turned, the window pivots outside. It is held in place with a hinged side and allows maximum ventilation compared with other types of windows.
  • Awning: This style is similar to the casement design, except the windows swing upward and are opened from the bottom. A crank handle is used to move the window.
  • BayWhen the window area protrudes from the perimeter of the house in an angled design, it is necessary to have a bay window design. Bay windows have three openings.
  • BowSimilar to bay windows because the windows are placed at an angle outward from the outside wall of the home. Except, a bow window has more angles than a bay window, often including four or five windows within the design.
  • Picture:If you want to maximize the view, then consider the benefits of a picture window. This design is usually a single, large window with only one pane of glass. It is a fixed window, and the size of the window is the design that determines that it is a picture window. This style is stationary and rectangular, allowing a lot of natural sunlight into the room.
  • CustomWorking with a custom window contractor means that the possibilities are endless. You can choose any size or combination of the different types of windows that are offered. Custom window designs allow you to choose the color, features, and size that will look best in your home.

As you can see, there are many types of windows that you might consider. The easiest way to make your choice is to talk with an experienced window installer.
